University of PennsylvaniaAbout
Farshid Mohammad-Rafiee is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences, Department of Physics and Astronomy (October 2023–present). He holds a primary position as an Associate Professor of Physics at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS), Iran, where he has served for nearly two decades. His research focuses on the intersection of physics and biology, including active and passive membrane deformations, chromatin structure dynamics, gene regulation mechanisms, active cytoskeleton processes, microbial growth, and applying physical learning models to study protein adaptation and epistasis. He employs theoretical models and numerical simulations in his work.
Education: Ph.D. in Physics (2005) from IASBS under Prof. Ramin Golestanian; Postdoctoral Research (2006-2007) at ESPCI, Paris, in Prof. Pierre Sens' group.
Research interests emphasize biological physics and soft matter, with a strong theoretical and computational foundation. At UPenn, he expands his exploration into complex biological systems using interdisciplinary approaches.
