Mohammad Rafiee

Mohammad Rafiee is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), affiliated with the School of Science and Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry (2007) and B.Sc. in Chemistry (2001) from Bu-Ali Sina University, Iran. His research focuses on electrochemical synthesis, molecular electrochemistry, and sustainable chemistry, emphasizing reaction mechanisms and green synthesis methods. Key techniques include cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. He has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate students, with alumni spanning academic and industrial roles. His lab, the Rafiee Group, develops electrochemical tools for drug metabolism studies and electrocatalytic reactions. Notable publications include work on aminoxyl-mediated oxidations and scalable electrochemical coupling methods. Rafiee has also contributed to educational initiatives in electrochemistry through experimental protocols and pedagogical frameworks.

Lab & Collaborations: Rafiee’s lab (Rafiee Group) designs novel electrochemical methodologies for organic synthesis and analyses reaction mechanisms. Collaborations include work with Prof. Shannon Stahl at UW-Madison and the development of electrochemical pipette techniques for microanalysis.

Students & Advising: Current graduate students include Buwanila Punchihewa and Nastaran Nikzad. Alumni such as Mikayla Mayer and Matthew Mumau have contributed to projects on alcohol oxidation and electrocatalytic sensors.
