Dr. Fabian Jonietz is an Associate Scholar at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (Max Planck Institute for Art History). He leads a DFG-funded project on 'Tier-Memoria in der Vormoderne' at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich since 2021. Previously, he served as a research assistant in the SFB 573 'Pluralisierung und Autorität in der Frühen Neuzeit' (2008–2011) and as a scientific assistant in Alessandro Nova’s department at the Florentine Institute (2011–2020). He has held substitute professorships at LMU Munich (2021, 2023/24) and taught at universities like Basel, Konstanz, Mainz, and Salzburg.
His research focuses on early modern European art history, clandestine art practices, body/medical history, and animal memory. He is completing a habilitation on 'Verbergen und Begehren: Klandestine Bildpraktiken und die Wertschätzung seltener Kunstobjekte in der Vormoderne' (submitted Spring 2024).
Jonietz has received prestigious awards including the Heinrich-Wölfflin-Preis and Jens-Peter-Haeusgen-Stipendium. He has been affiliated with international institutions like the Collegium Carolinum, Forschungszentrum Gotha, and Columbia University’s Italian Academy. His work bridges historical research with contemporary debates on materiality and transcultural art history.
