Evelyn Perry

Evelyn Perry is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Rhodes College, with affiliations in Anthropology and Sociology, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Urban Studies, Africana Studies, and Media Studies. Her research focuses on urban and community sociology, exploring how inequality is produced, perpetuated, or challenged through neighborhood dynamics.

Education:

• B.A. in Sociology from Colorado College
• M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Indiana University

Her work investigates processes of integration in racially and socioeconomically diverse neighborhoods, emphasizing how residents navigate conflict and stability without conformity. Key projects include studying evangelical families transitioning to high-poverty urban areas and analyzing crime responses in diverse communities.

Evelyn’s interdisciplinary approach spans sociology, cultural studies, and urban policy. She is particularly interested in the frictions of diversity and how everyday interactions shape community cohesion.

Her teaching emphasizes critical thinking about social structures, inequality, and research methods, fostering connections between classroom learning and real-world contexts.

She resides in Clough Hall, 205 at Rhodes College and maintains active engagement with both her native Milwaukee and global communities through travel and exploration.
