About
Dr. Emily Walton is Associate Professor of Sociology at Dartmouth College with PhD from University of Washington. Her research examines racial and ethnic diversity in community contexts, investigating how residential segregation patterns perpetuate inequality and impact health outcomes. Current projects analyze experiences of people of color in predominantly white rural communities and integration dynamics in multiethnic urban neighborhoods.
Research explores micro-level racial boundary maintenance through 'misrecognition' - systematic patterns of non-attention that marginalize minorities in rural New England. Studies reveal how white cultural norms create exclusionary environments despite demographic diversification, particularly affecting Asian American and Hispanic residents in rural settings.
Publications focus on spatial dimensions of racial inequality, with recent work examining cultural whiteness in integration processes and psychological impacts of misrecognition. Articles demonstrate consistent methodological innovation in studying racial dynamics across urban, suburban, and rural contexts.
Teaches courses on Racism in Asian America, Critical Community Sociology, Health Disparities, and Race/Racisms. Developed pedagogical approaches connecting sociological theory with community-based research on racial equity.
Leads 'Humans of the Upper Valley' community documentation project and serves as Faculty Director of Society of Fellows, fostering interdisciplinary scholarship on diversity and inclusion.
