About
Eva Hayward is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona, Tucson. She holds a Ph.D. in History of Consciousness from UC Santa Cruz (2008). Her research bridges aesthetics, environmental science studies, and sexuality, focusing on intersections of race, marine ecology, and queer theory. She has taught courses on Feminist Animal Studies, Environmental Studies, and Queer Cinema.
Hayward’s work includes a forthcoming book *SymbioSeas*, examining marine organisms and scientific representation through a queer ecological lens. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at Uppsala University (Sweden) and Duke University. Her publications appear in *Angelaki*, *Cultural Anthropology*, and *Transgender Studies Quarterly*.
In 2018, she delivered the Doing Gender Lecture at Utrecht University, exploring Ellen Gallagher’s art and the racial politics of oceanic narratives. Her research critically engages anti-black racism in environmental discourses and the 'oceanic feeling' as a site of geopolitical trauma.
