Dr. Esther Oliva is a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and serves as Director of Gynecologic Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. She leads the Gynecologic Pathology Group, which provides diagnostic services to patients and consists of eight faculty members who handle a large volume of high-quality in-patient material from Mass General's busy gynecologic oncology and general gynecology services.
Dr. Oliva's research focuses on the pathology and molecular biology of gynecologic malignancies, with particular expertise in renal and testicular tumors. She is an active member of the Gillette Center for Gynecologic Oncology's Clinical Research laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. Her educational background includes an MD from the University of Barcelona, followed by residencies at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and Massachusetts General Hospital, and additional fellowships at Hospital Clinic I Provincial de Barcelona, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Her publication record demonstrates extensive contributions to gynecologic pathology, with recent work focusing on molecular characterization of endometrial carcinomas, cervical cancer subtypes, and uterine tumors. She has been involved in developing clinical guidelines through her work with the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists, particularly regarding endometrial carcinoma diagnosis and classification. Her research spans both conventional clinico-pathologic studies and translational/basic research, with numerous peer-reviewed publications appearing annually.
Dr. Oliva is fluent in Catalan, Spanish, and English, enhancing her ability to serve diverse patient populations. Her clinical interests include Frozen Section Pathology, Genitourinary pathology, and Gynecologic pathology. She provides consultative services in the frozen section laboratory and participates in weekly tumor board meetings with gynecologic oncology surgeons. She contributes to resident education through sign-out sessions, lectures, and weekly presentations of interesting cases at the surgical pathology conference.
