Erwin Mantingh

Dr. Erwin Mantingh serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University's Faculty of Humanities. His academic appointment focuses on Translation, Intercultural Communication and Education, with specialization in Medieval Culture through the Institute for Cultural Inquiry.

Mantingh's research interests center on Dutch language education methodology, literary-historical reasoning, and text comprehension in educational contexts. He has developed 'literatuurhistorisch redeneren' (literary-historical reasoning) as an activating didactic model for literature history education, collaborating with Sander Bax to create practical teaching materials used in secondary education.

His work bridges historical literary studies with contemporary educational practice, particularly in how pre-university students comprehend complex texts and how literary history can be taught effectively. Mantingh has contributed significantly to national educational policy through his chairmanship of SLO (Foundation for Curriculum Development) from 2022-2024 and participation in the Dutch Subject Renewal Committee that updated final terms for Dutch language education.

Mantingh maintains active connections with educational practice through his role as administrative coordinator of three national programs under Humanities Subject Didactics: Dudoc-Alfa, Mastership in Subject Didactics, and Postdoc VO GW. He is registered with the Dutch Association of Teacher Educators (VELON) and has published extensively with subject specialists, teacher educators, teachers, students, and pupils.
