About
Eric Raes is an Adjunct Professor at the UWA Oceans Institute, The University of Western Australia. His research focuses on microbial ecology, marine biogeochemistry, and environmental DNA (eDNA) applications, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to ocean sustainability. He has published extensively on topics including microbial diversity, nitrogen cycles, and genomic analysis of marine species.
His recent work includes studies on eDNA-based taxonomic classification, genome assemblies of marine vertebrates, and CRISPR-driven environmental DNA processing. Raes collaborates globally, with projects spanning the South Pacific, Indian Ocean, and global microbial diversity patterns. He contributed to the Australian Chlorophyll a Database (1965–2017), a key resource for marine research.
Publications highlight advancements in understanding oceanic nitrogen processes, seasonal microbial dynamics, and genomic tools for marine conservation. His research bridges fundamental science with applications in climate change adaptation and biodiversity monitoring.
