Eric Coombs Esmail

Eric Coombs Esmail serves as Assistant Professor in Critical Media Practices at the University of Colorado and Director of the Center for Documentary and Ethnographic Media. His work bridges documentary filmmaking, community activism, and critical pedagogy with a focus on labor, spirituality, and human migration.

His research explores power dynamics through visual media, examining how documentary practice navigates solipsism and intersubjectivity. Current projects include American Refuge (a feature documentary on houseless communities in Colorado forests) and LEO SACER (a short documentary about ecological violence involving a mountain lion). His scholarship integrates media theory with hands-on community engagement, emphasizing local impact through open educational resources.

As Director of the Center for Documentary and Ethnographic Media, he organizes the annual Mimesis Documentary Festival in Boulder. He co-founded the non-profit Process Reversal and co-manages Deranged Penguin Productions with Christian Hammons. His filmography includes exhibitions at Anthology Film Archives (New York), Denver Art Museum, and international venues across London, Paris, and Montpelier.
