University of Maryland, BaltimoreAbout
Eric A. Toth serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Maryland College Park since 2004, with dual appointments at the Center for Biomolecular Therapeutics (as Section Leader in Structural Biology since 2011) and the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center's Molecular and Structural Biology Program.
Education:
- B.A. in Biochemistry, University of Pennsylvania

- Postdoctoral training: UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry & Harvard Medical School Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology
His research integrates structural biology with therapeutic development across three primary domains: structure-based drug design for cancer targets, neurological disease mechanisms involving kynurenine pathway dysregulation, and oxidative DNA damage repair systems. Utilizing X-ray crystallography as a core methodology, his work bridges fundamental protein structure analysis with translational applications in oncology and neurodegeneration.
Publication analysis reveals consistent emphasis on protein-ligand interactions in disease contexts, particularly cancer therapeutics (NQO1/S100B targeting) and neurodegenerative pathways (kynurenine metabolism). His structural approaches consistently uncover mechanistic insights driving inhibitor design and target validation.
As Section Leader of Structural Biology, Dr. Toth directs collaborative efforts across the University System of Maryland, providing crystallographic expertise to accelerate therapeutic development for cancer and neurological disorders through both independent research and cross-institutional partnerships.
