Emmanuel Akyeampong serves as the Ellen Gurney Professor of History and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, where he also directs the Center for African Studies as Oppenheimer Faculty Director. He holds additional appointments as faculty associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and board member of the Du Bois Institute.
His academic training includes a PhD in African History from the University of Virginia (1993), MA in English labor history from Wake Forest University (1989), and BA in History and Religions from the University of Ghana at Legon (1984).
Akyeampong's research centers on African history with deep specialization in West Africa and Ghana. His work spans social history, eco-social systems, alcohol history, slavery studies, colonial dynamics, and cultural transformations. He examines intersections of power, spirituality, and political economy across precolonial, colonial, and contemporary periods, increasingly addressing modern challenges like environmental change and Sino-African relations.
Recent publications reveal interdisciplinary expansion into climate vulnerability, gender dynamics in extractive industries, precolonial knowledge systems, and religious pluralism. His scholarship maintains Ghana as an anchor while connecting to broader continental and global frameworks through diaspora studies and transnational engagements.
