Emily M Hill

Emily M Hill is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Queen's University. She specializes in the political and economic history of modern China, particularly focusing on the period 1931–1958. Her research examines land reform, agricultural industrialization, and state-building processes in China and Taiwan since the 1950s.

Education: Ph.D. in the History of Modern China from Cornell University (1996).

Her research interests include Modern China, East Asia, and environmental history of modern agriculture. Recent projects explore the political economy of agriculture and its role in industrialization. She has published extensively on topics such as Chiang Kai-shek's leadership, state-building challenges, and the interplay between bureaucracy and national economic development.

Dr. Hill supervises graduate students in modern Chinese history and teaches courses on contemporary China, East Asian history, and post-1949 China. In 2024, she was recognized for 25 years of service at Queen's University.
