Emily Hong

Emily Hong is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Visual Studies at Haverford College. She is a Seoul-born, Philadelphia-based visual anthropologist and filmmaker who conducts long-term research with political and environmental activists in Southeast Asia, focusing on Myanmar and Thailand.

Her scholarship challenges colonial legacies in anthropology and documentary filmmaking by centering non-Western epistemologies. Research areas include visual anthropology, political/legal anthropology, gender and sexuality studies, and Southeast Asian environmental movements.

Recent Article Trends: Her publications in Cultural Anthropology and Visual Anthropology Review emphasize feminist sensory ethnography, collaborative filmmaking, and the intersection of activism with artistic practices.

Grants & Affiliations: Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Wenner-Gren Foundation, Center for Asian American Media, Bertha Foundation, Tribeca Film Institute, and Gotham Film & Media Institute.
