Emily Corbett is a Lecturer in Education (Children’s Literature) at the Department of Educational Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London. She specializes in children’s and YA literature, focusing on how literature reflects and shapes societal dynamics, particularly regarding transgender representation and censorship. Her research examines the British YA book market’s paratextual materials and their impact on reader engagement.
Corbett holds a PhD in Children's Literature from the University of Roehampton, an MA in English Studies from the University of Exeter, and a BA in English from the University of Leicester. She leads the MA Children's Literature program and directs the BA English with the University of London Worldwide. She co-leads the children’s/YA literature strand at the Centre for Language, Culture and Learning and serves as General Editor for *The International Journal of Young Adult Literature*.
Her recent monograph *In Transition* (2024) explores transgender representation in YA fiction, while her articles analyze censorship trends, translation impacts, and interdisciplinary approaches to YA studies. Current doctoral supervision includes projects on comic-making, Critical Race Theory in children’s literature, and picturebook portrayals of friendship.
Corbett’s research project *Perceptions of Pain* investigates how YA fiction shapes adolescents’ understanding of pain. She actively mentors PhD students in YA literature and advocates for inclusive, diverse storytelling in academic and publishing contexts.
