Em Kohl (they/them) is a Graduate Lecturer and third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Communication Studies at George Mason University. They also serve as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Center for Climate Change Communication. Their research focuses on climate risk communication in rural Appalachia, intersectional identity in communication, media studies, and critical research methodologies.

Research explores how pop culture and media serve as platforms for climate science communication, emphasizing experiential knowledge and queer theoretical frameworks. Recent work critiques toxic workplace cultures in culinary environments. Awards include the 2020 Food Studies International Award for Excellence.
Advising roles include undergraduate academic mentorship and Communication Club leadership at Bridgewater College. Currently holds the Institute for a Sustainable Earth Summer Fellowship (2023).
