Ellen G. Millender is the Omar and Althea Hoskins Professor of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies and Humanities at Reed College. She teaches Humanities 110, Greek and Latin language courses at all levels, and specialized courses in Greek and Roman history and historiography. Her research focuses on ancient Sparta, particularly Athenian representations of Spartan society during the fifth and fourth centuries BCE.
Millender's work examines Spartan social, political, and intellectual history, including literacy patterns, kingship structures, military organization, and gender/sexual mores. Her recent publications explore Spartan women, royal authority, military leadership, and conceptualizations of Spartan society in historical texts.
Her scholarly approach combines rigorous historical analysis with interdisciplinary perspectives on cultural representation. Millender's publications demonstrate consistent engagement with primary sources and critical examination of Spartan society through multiple lenses including gender studies, political theory, and cultural anthropology.
