Ella Simpson

Dr Ella Simpson is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the School of Law and Criminology, University of Greenwich, where she has taught since 2022. She leads modules on criminological theories, penological theory and policy, and criminal justice practice, integrating her professional experience as a prison practitioner.

Her research focuses on people’s lived experiences of prison and post-release life, grounded in narrative, historical, and cultural criminology, alongside creative arts interventions in criminal justice settings. Ella previously held academic positions at the University of Winchester and Bath Spa University, where she earned her PhD.

Before returning to academia in 2013, she worked as a creative arts facilitator in prisons for over a decade, contributing to collaborative projects and writing anthologies with incarcerated individuals.
