About
Dr. Elke Richert serves as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Biosciences, Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, where she has been a member of the Biology/Ecology Working Group since November 1996. Her academic home is within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, where she contributes significantly to both research and teaching activities in vegetation ecology and conservation biology.
Her educational background includes a doctorate from the University of Bayreuth (1996) with research focused on "Vegetation, Structure and Dynamics at Forest Edges in Southern Germany," building upon her biology studies at the University of Bayreuth (1990-1995) and initial biology coursework at the University of Osnabrück (1985-1987).
Dr. Richert's research expertise centers on vegetation ecology in specialized environments, particularly examining plant strategies in extreme locations including mining dumps, vineyards, and pond sludge. Her methodological strengths include vegetation analysis, mapping of various biotope types, and the development of evaluation procedures for vegetation dynamics. She has made substantial contributions to biodiversity research in post-mining landscapes, vineyards, and forest edge ecosystems, with particular focus on ecological site parameters and conservation applications.
Her research portfolio demonstrates consistent external funding, with involvement in significant projects including BIODIVina (climate change adaptation in viticulture, 2019-2021), PhytoGerm (germanium extraction from biomass, 2012-2015), and leadership of Saxony's Species Protection Concept (2008-2010). Earlier work included important contributions to flood protection and nature conservation through the HochNatur project (2003-2007) and specialized vegetation studies of mining pond ecosystems in the GehVege project (2007-2010).
Dr. Richert serves in editorial capacities for respected academic publications, acting as Editorial Coordinator for the journal FLORA since 2014 and as Subject Editor for Freiberg Ecology online (FECO) since 2016. Her teaching responsibilities encompass foundational biology education with botanical emphasis, Geoecology bachelor's and master's programs, vegetation ecological assessment and evaluation methods, and nature conservation biology including biotope mapping and landscape assessment.
Her professional activities extend to providing expert assessments for environmental authorities on biotope mapping and management concepts, demonstrating the practical application of her ecological expertise to regional conservation challenges in Saxony and beyond.
