Harald Bratli is an Associate Professor in the Department of Research and Collections at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo. He has been with UiO since 2016 and is a member of the Geo-Ecological Research Group (GEco). His work focuses on vegetation ecology, particularly within cultural landscapes, semi-natural habitats, and forests across Norway.
Dr. Bratli's primary research interests include:
- Vegetation ecology of cultural landscapes and semi-natural habitats
- Effects of management and overgrowth in semi-natural habitats
- Population biology of endangered vascular plants
- Methods for classifying habitats and mapping nature
- Development of the Norwegian Species Data Bank's habitat and nature description system (Nature in Norway/NiN)
- Biodiversity assessment in forests, salt meadows, sand dunes, and rocky habitats
His publication record shows consistent research activity through 2023, with a strong emphasis on ecosystem mapping methodologies, biodiversity assessment frameworks, and conservation of threatened species. Dr. Bratli has made significant contributions to the Norwegian Red List for Species, particularly in lichens and vascular plants. His work often involves multi-institutional collaboration addressing practical conservation challenges related to habitat management and monitoring.
Dr. Bratli teaches BIO4120 - Norwegian natural variation, focusing on typification, description and mapping of natural variation based on the "Nature in Norway" (NiN) system. His career includes research positions at the Norwegian Institute of Forest and Landscape Research (from 1998) and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) (from 2011), before joining UiO as Associate Professor in 2016.
As part of the Geo-Ecological Research Group, Dr. Bratli collaborates on projects including "Biodiversity at 3 levels: mapping and barcoding of crustose lichens and lichen-dwelling fungi in Norwegian rainforests" with NTNU Science Museum and "From grassland to flower meadow" with NIBIO. His research integrates field ecology with practical conservation applications, contributing significantly to Norway's understanding and management of its natural heritage.
