Elizabeth Cole

Elizabeth Cole, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She serves as a nocturnist providing overnight clinical coverage for newly admitted and existing patients at both UNC-CH and Hillsborough hospitals.

Her educational qualifications include:

• Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Medical Concentration in Classics from Columbia University (2004-2008)
• MD from University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (2010-2013)
• Internship in Neurology at University of North Carolina Hospitals (2013-2014)
• Residency in Internal Medicine at University of North Carolina Hospitals (2014-2016)

Dr. Cole's clinical expertise centers on inpatient general medicine with specialized focus on bedside procedures and ultrasound diagnostics. She actively promotes bedside ultrasound as a cost-effective, accessible diagnostic tool amid advancing portability of the technology. Her educational commitment is demonstrated through her role as tutor in the Practice of Clinical Care (PCC) course, where she trains medical students in patient interviewing, physical examination, and clinical application of basic sciences.

As a PCC tutor, Dr. Cole guides first and second-year medical students through longitudinal skill development, emphasizing integration of theoretical knowledge with practical patient care scenarios in early clinical training.

Within the Division of Hospital Medicine, she contributes to the clinical team's nocturnal operations across UNC's hospital network, maintaining active involvement in both direct patient care and medical education initiatives focused on foundational clinical competencies.
