Elizabeth Stern

Elizabeth Stern, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She is affiliated with UNC Hospitals where she provides clinical care, teaches medical students and residents, and participates in quality improvement initiatives.

Her research interests focus on examining risk factors for and impact of delirium in acutely ill patients, exploring potential catatonic subtypes of delirium, and developing quality improvement projects to enhance patient care both during hospitalization and after discharge. She is particularly interested in utilizing point of care ultrasound to augment diagnosis at the bedside.

Dr. Stern emphasizes patient advocacy in her clinical practice, working to understand patients' perspectives and helping them understand their conditions to empower them in their healthcare journey.

As an academic hospitalist, Dr. Stern is actively involved in medical education, teaching medical students and residents while providing complex clinical care to acutely ill patients. She serves on various quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing hospital systems and patient outcomes.
