Elise Stephenson

Dr. Elise Stephenson is Deputy Director and Research Fellow at the Australian National University's Global Institute for Women’s Leadership (GIWL), founded by former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Her work focuses on gender equity in international affairs, national security, and climate justice. She holds a PhD in gender, international affairs, and diplomacy, alongside multiple advanced degrees in international studies and governance.

Her research interests span women’s leadership in diplomacy, queer inclusion in international institutions, and the intersection of social entrepreneurship with public policy. She has authored The Face of the Nation: Gendered Institutions in International Affairs, featuring insights from prominent figures like Julia Gillard and Julie Bishop.

Elise leads major initiatives like the Australia-ASEAN Emerging Leaders Program and Curates, a public diplomacy platform. She is a sought-after consultant on gender equality, social innovation, and next-generation leadership. Awards include the Chancellor’s Medal, Fulbright Scholarship, and recognition as a Top 50 LGBTI+ Leader.

She serves on boards such as the Australian Feminist Foreign Policy Steering Committee and Brisbane City Council’s Inclusive Brisbane Board. Her work bridges academia, government, and civil society across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
