Edwina Smith is a lecturer at the University of York's School of Arts and Creative Technologies, teaching modern and baroque flute. She provides specialist baroque tuition to students from other northern England universities and serves as the external woodwind recital examiner for the University of Huddersfield. Since 2020, she has contributed to the MA Music Education: Instrumental and Vocal Teaching program.
Her research focuses on historical instruments, performance repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary works, and instrument conservation. She actively performs with ensembles like Yorkshire Baroque Soloists and The Fairfax Ensemble, specializing in 18th-21st century repertoire. Her scholarly work includes cataloguing over 400 historical flutes for Edinburgh University and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Awards include the Principal’s Prize for Junior Music and support from the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust. She co-published an edition of Haydn’s trios and authored an article in the Haydn Society Journal.
