Edwin Porras is the Inaugural Norton Family Assistant Professor of Music at Haverford College. His research focuses on Latin American musical cultures of the African and Asian diasporas, with thematic interests in power dynamics at the intersection of class, race, and gender, as well as applied ethnomusicology and social justice.
- Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles (2020)
Dr. Porras's dissertation, Music-Making Practices of Cubans of Chinese and African Descent, explores underrepresented narratives in Cuban musical history. He is currently preparing a monograph and conducting multi-sited research on Asian diasporic music in Peru, Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica. His work aligns with memberships in the Applied Ethnomusicology and Latin America and the Caribbean Music sections, as well as the organology group.
