Edwin Gitschthaler

Edwin Gitschthaler serves as Honorary Professor of Civil Law at the University of Vienna's Faculty of Law, Institute for Civil Law, and lectures at Sigmund Freud Private University of Vienna. He concurrently holds the position of Chairman of the 6th Senate of the Austrian Supreme Court (OGH), specializing in corporate law, commercial register law, and data protection.

His research concentrates on Family Law with deep expertise in Maintenance Law (Alimony) and Division Law governing marital asset distribution. He has shaped the field through authorship of foundational texts including "Alimony Law" and "Division Law", alongside editorial leadership of the EF-Z Journal of Family and Inheritance Law and "International Family Law".

Professor Gitschthaler teaches specialized University of Vienna courses: "KU right of allocation" covering marital asset division in divorce scenarios, "KU Until judge or death do you part" analyzing property consequences of marriage dissolution, and "KU The marital home" addressing tenancy, inheritance, and violence protection issues surrounding shared residences—all requiring prior civil law knowledge.
