Edward Rhett Landis, PhD, ABPP, serves as Consulting Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine while holding leadership roles as Treasurer of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology and Public Member of the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission. Previously, he retired after nearly 30 years with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, culminating as Chief of Psychology Services at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, NC.
His educational foundation includes a bachelor's degree in psychology summa cum laude from Emory University (1981), followed by M.A. (1985) and Ph.D. (1989) from the University of Louisville. He completed a Clinical and Forensic Psychology internship jointly sponsored by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the U.S. Department of Justice.
Dr. Landis's research centers on forensic psychological evaluations, particularly competence to stand trial and involuntary psychiatric treatment within legal contexts. His scholarship includes co-authoring 'Law for the Psychotherapist' (W.W. Norton) and numerous articles bridging psychological practice and legal standards. He actively promotes mentoring as a critical professional development tool through specialized training programs.
His recognition includes the Judy T. Konanc Award for excellence in teaching. Professional leadership extends to serving on the American Board of Professional Psychology examination faculty and developing curricula for federal judicial training programs.
With decades of experience in high-stakes forensic settings, Dr. Landis integrates practical legal knowledge with clinical psychology expertise. His current work focuses on mentoring frameworks, forensic evaluation standards, and educating legal professionals through the American Academy of Forensic Psychology.
