Edward Murphy

Edward Murphy is an Associate Professor at Michigan State University, based in the Department of History. His research focuses on Latin American urbanization, inequality, domesticity, state formation, and political economy, with a primary emphasis on Chilean history since the 1950s and Guatemala. He has published extensively on housing rights and interdisciplinary approaches blending history and anthropology.

His research interests integrate urban studies, social inequality, and political economy, particularly examining marginalized groups' property regimes. He has authored a collaborative oral history book (Historias poblacionales), edited volumes on anthrohistory and modern urban housing, and published For a Proper Home (2015), analyzing housing rights in Chile.

Teaching includes courses on Latin American history, urban studies, and interdisciplinary methods such as HST 850 and ANP 810. His work bridges historical and anthropological perspectives, emphasizing marginalized urban communities' struggles.
