Dr Eden Barrett is a public health nutrition researcher, academic and dietitian with expertise in nutrition, dietetics and food policy. She serves as a Research Fellow in the Food Policy division at the George Institute for Global Health and holds a position as Conjoint Lecturer at the University of New South Wales. Additionally, she maintains a co-appointment at the Food is Medicine Institute and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, Boston.
Dr Barrett leads a global research program focused on using large-scale food composition data to evaluate the nutritional quality and sustainability of the global food supply. Her work advances evidence-based tools and policies, including nutrient profiling systems and front-of-pack labelling strategies, aimed at supporting healthier diets and reducing diet-related disease risk across diverse populations. Her research spans nutrition science, food composition analysis, and policy development with practical applications for public health interventions worldwide.

Dr Barrett actively mentors the next generation of researchers, currently supervising three doctoral students: Elissa Price working on food classification systems, Mariel Keaney developing frameworks for front-of-pack sustainability labelling, and Prisca Arfines evaluating commercially produced foods for infants and young children across Australia and Indonesia. She has secured substantial research funding including the GrainSwitch project ($69,995 AUD), Food Compass Consultancy ($128,000 AUD), and the Healthier Diets for Healthy Lives sub-award (₵1,661,568 GHS), demonstrating her ability to translate research into practical applications with real-world impact.
Within her institutions, Dr Barrett founded the CRE Human and Planetary Health Early- and Mid-Career Researcher Group at The George Institute and serves on the UNSW School of Health Sciences Research Strategy Committee, demonstrating her commitment to academic leadership and community building in the field of public health nutrition.
