University of Texas Southwestern Medical CenterAbout
Dwight German is a Professor of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center, leading the German Laboratory. His research focuses on blood-based biomarker discovery for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and autism spectrum disorder.
His primary research interests include neurodegenerative diseases and autism. He investigates blood biomarkers for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's to enable early intervention during the pre-symptomatic phase. His work explores environmental risk factors such as pesticide exposure (DDT metabolites), the role of the exposome, and the protective effects of exercise in Alzheimer's. For autism, he studies immune dysfunction and blood biomarkers, while also examining vaccine safety.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on biomarker validation across diverse platforms and species. He has developed protein panels in blood with high diagnostic accuracy for neurodegenerative diseases, and is validating these for clinical use. His autism research employs proteomic and autoantibody approaches to identify early biomarkers.
Dr. German is currently funded by multiple grants from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the Brain Foundation, and the Dallas Foundation. He collaborates extensively with researchers in Molecular Genetics, the McDermott Center, Bioinformatics, and institutions including the University of Georgia, Emory University, and Stanford University.
The German Laboratory utilizes proteomic, metabolomic, and animal model approaches to advance biomarker discovery. The lab's work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to transform early detection and intervention for neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders.
