Dr. Drew Whiting is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, specializing in contemporary and experimental music performance. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Vandoren Artist-Clinician, performing on Yamaha saxophones and Vandoren products. His expertise spans solo, chamber, and electroacoustic settings, with a focus on 20th and 21st-century repertoire.
Education: B.M. and M.M. from Michigan State University College of Music (studying with Joseph Lulloff), followed by a D.M.A. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (studying with Debra Richtmeyer).
Research interests include new music advocacy, electroacoustic performance practice, and saxophone pedagogy. His debut album In Lights Starkly Different (Innova Recordings) highlights his work with contemporary composers and electronics. He has performed at major festivals including Electronic Music Midwest, SEAMUS, and Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium.
Teaching and leadership: Co-directs the experimental music ensemble at UWO, teaches aural skills, saxophone, and chamber music. Founded the Wisconsin Saxophone Summit (2017), and conducts clinics across schools and universities.
Performance groups include the Coalescent Quartet (baritone saxophonist), Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and Water City Jazz Orchestra. Notable collaborations include work with composers Alexis Bacon, Betsy Jolas, and Pauline Oliveros.
