Douglas Battema

Douglas Battema is a Professor of Communication at Western New England University and currently serves as Chair of the College of Communication, Media & Arts and Interim Chair of the Department of English & Cultural Studies. He has been teaching at Western New England since 2002, following academic and professional roles at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Pennsylvania, the Milwaukee Brewers' Media Relations office, and Amherst College's Sports Information Department.

• Education: B.A. from Amherst College, M.A. from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Research Interests: Battema focuses on sports and media, media representation, media history, media regulation, and baseball's cultural impact. His work explores intersections of media industries, governance, and societal identities like race, gender, and ethnicity.

Teaching: Courses include Introduction to Public Speaking, Media Industries, Government, and Society, Race, Gender, and Ethnicity in Media, and Baseball and American Culture.

Professional Affiliations: Member of the National Communication Association and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
