Doug Downey

Doug Downey is a Professor of Sociology at Ohio State University and a former Visiting Researcher at the Research Department of Skill Formation and Labor Markets. His research focuses on how schools shape inequality, particularly through the lens of cognitive, social, and behavioral skill development.

Downey investigates disparities in children’s academic progress and health outcomes, challenging assumptions about school quality and inequality perpetuation. At the WZB, he expanded his work to examine whether schools exacerbate or mitigate social and behavioral skill gaps beyond traditional cognitive metrics.

His scholarship bridges sociology, education policy, and developmental psychology, emphasizing the role of non-cognitive skills in academic and labor market success.
