About
Dirk Heider is an Associate Professor at the University of Delaware with a secondary appointment at the Center for Composite Materials. His research focuses on advanced sensing methods, artificial neural networks for composite manufacturing control, and non-destructive evaluation of composite materials. He develops sensor systems and materials to enhance composite functionality, including integrated fiber optics for structural health monitoring and carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets for in-situ monitoring of carbon structures. He has been the Assistant Director for Technology at the Center for Composite Materials since 2000, securing funding from the Department of Defense and industrial partners like Boeing. He has authored over 100 papers and advised over 50 students globally.
He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware (1998) and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Technical University of Aachen, Germany.
Research interests include ultrasonic wave propagation in composites, lightning strike effects on electrical properties, and thermal characteristics of composites. His work emphasizes multifunctional composites, combining structural performance with sensing capabilities. Recent studies involve optimizing thermoplastic composites for automotive applications and improving resin transfer molding processes.
Globally recognized for contributions to composite manufacturing and structural health monitoring, Prof. Heider’s research bridges materials science, electrical engineering, and mechanical systems. His grants and collaborations highlight industry-relevant innovations in composite materials processing and performance evaluation.
