Dimitrios Kontogeorgis

Dimitrios Kontogeorgis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Cyprus. His academic career spans teaching and research in Modern Greek and Balkan history, with a particular focus on diaspora communities and economic history.

His educational background includes:

• Bachelor's degree in History and Archaeology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1996-2000)
• Master's degree in Modern and Contemporary Greek History from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2000-2003)
• PhD in Modern Greek History from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (completed 2012)

Dr. Kontogeorgis specializes in Modern Greek and Balkan political and social history, with particular expertise in diaspora and migration studies, economic and social history of Greece and Southeastern Europe (especially 18th-19th centuries), and Mediterranean history. His research examines the complex interplay between local communities, national movements, and international economic forces in shaping the modern Balkans.

His scholarly publications demonstrate a consistent focus on Greek diaspora communities in Southeastern Europe, particularly in Romania, and their economic, social, and political development. He has extensively researched the Greek communities of Braila and other Danubian ports, examining their role in regional commerce, navigation, and community organization during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Dr. Kontogeorgis has been involved in numerous research projects including:

• Research project funded by the Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy (2017-present) on Austrian shipping policy during the Greek Revolution of 1821
• International, inter-university research program "The Black Sea and its port-cities 1774-1914" (2013-2016)
• Research program "Thessaloniki in Crisis (1929-1936)" (2013-2015)
• Greek working group for the museological program of the Nebojsa Tower in Belgrade (2009-2011)
