Professor Derek Edyvane is a faculty member at the University of Leeds, holding the position of Professor of Political Theory in the School of Politics and International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences. He is founding director of the Centre for Contemporary Political Theory and Editor of the British Journal of Politics and International Relations. His academic background includes a PhD and a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of York.
Edyvane specializes in contemporary political philosophy, focusing on intersections between political theory and everyday life. Key research interests include citizenship, civility, political ethics, resistance, and the methodology of political theory. His work explores topics such as incivility as dissent, ordinary citizenship, and the ethics of political deception.
Recent publications include The Politics of Politeness: Citizenship, Civility, and the Democracy of Everyday Life (2025) and articles in leading journals like Political Studies and Philosophy & Social Criticism. He has received awards including the Political Studies Harrison Prize (2021) and an AHRC Fellowship (2022-23).
Edyvane supervises PhD students on themes such as resistance ethics, everyday citizenship, and political methodology. His grants include funding from AHRC, ESRC, the British Academy, and the Leverhulme Trust. He leads the Centre for Contemporary Political Theory and contributes to the Centre for Democratic Engagement.
