Derek Dube

Derek Dube, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biology and Director of the First Year Seminar Program at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). He joined USJ in 2014 and holds academic degrees from the University of Virginia (Ph.D.) and James Madison University (B.S.). His dual research focus spans scientific studies of microbial ecology and viral mechanisms, alongside education-based work promoting equity, inclusion, and pedagogical innovation in higher education.

Dr. Dube teaches courses such as First Year Seminar: Life on Mars?, Bioinformatics, and Genetics, integrating active learning and technology like 3D printing models. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles across scientific and educational journals, including Journal of Virology and Simulation & Gaming. His co-authored book What Inclusive Instructors Do (Stylus Publishing, 2023) provides actionable strategies for equitable teaching practices.
