About
Debra Harris is a Professor in the Department of Human Sciences and Design at Baylor University's Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences. She is also a Fellow of the Center for Health Systems & Design at Texas A&M University. Her work centers on evidence-based design, integrating scientific research into architectural and interior design to improve health, safety, and sustainability in the built environment.
Her research interests include:
- Environmental health and wellness in built spaces
- Transmission of microbial and chemical contaminants
- Material science in interior finishes
- Behavioral design for obesity and health prevention
- Firefighter exposure to toxins and pathogens
- Sustainable and safe residential and healthcare environments
Her recent publications highlight a strong focus on infection control, particularly around SARS-CoV-2 and MRSA, as well as chemical and fire safety in furniture and firefighter gear. These works span disciplines including environmental science, public health, microbiology, and material engineering, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of her research.
She has received significant recognition, including:
- Architectural Research Centers Consortium King Medal
- ASID Joel Polsky Achievement Award
- TeamVISTA Award from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering
Dr. Harris leads the Environmental Forensics and Material Science Laboratory, where she mentors students and conducts applied research. She teaches courses in sustainable design, lighting, building materials, and interior design studios. Though specific advisees are not listed, she has supervised undergraduate honors theses. Her work is supported by grants such as the CDC SBIR Contract #75D30120C08537, aimed at developing tools for behavioral design in public health. The lab collaborates widely to assess health risks in occupied environments and translate findings into actionable design strategies.
