Deborah Achtenberg

Deborah Achtenberg is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her scholarship bridges ancient Greek philosophy (particularly Plato and Aristotle) and 20th-century continental thought (especially Levinas and Derrida), with additional focus on psychoanalytic theory. She authored Essential Vulnerabilities: Plato and Levinas on Relations to the Other (Northwestern University Press, 2014) and Cognition of Value in Aristotle's Ethics (SUNY Press, 2002).

Recent publications examine:

• Ethical dimensions of violence in Plato and Levinas
• Gender and sexuality in Levinas's Talmudic readings
• Intersections between desire, need, and ethics across philosophical traditions

She has presented keynote lectures at the North American Levinas Society and regularly contributes to international conferences on ancient and continental philosophy.
