About
David Whitmore is a Professor and Director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University. His research focuses on chronobiology, virology, and molecular biology with particular emphasis on circadian rhythms in aquatic organisms and pathogen detection in tropical environments. He holds roles as Research Advisor Accreditation Mentor and Chair.
Research Interests:
- Circadian rhythm mechanisms in fish and other vertebrates
- Herpesvirus and adenovirus discovery in reptiles and wildlife
- Non-visual photoreception adaptations in blind cavefish
- Molecular diagnostics for emerging tropical diseases
Recent Research Trends: His 2023 publications highlight advancements in viral detection methods and circadian clock mechanisms, while earlier work establishes foundational knowledge on fish chronobiology and epigenetic rhythmicity. The 2023 study on blind fish photoreception represents cutting-edge exploration of sensory adaptation in extreme environments.
Advising & Grants: Currently supervising PhD candidates researching spatial repellents for malaria control and conservation tools for pygmy hippopotamuses. Active in developing novel PCR-based diagnostic assays and CRISPR screening methods.
Labs & Collaborations: Central to the AITHM research hub, collaborating internationally on circadian systems and tropical disease research through institutions like ResearchOnline@JCU.
