Mr David Theak is a Senior Lecturer in Saxophone and Program Leader of the Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) at The University of Sydney's Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He holds a Master of Music (Performance) (MMus(Perf)).
His career spans over 25 years as a jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. He leads the internationally renowned Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra (JMO), which has toured Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, producing four CDs nominated for Australia Jazz CD of the Year. The 2011 release with Kristin Berardi won the Bell Award and an ARIA nomination. He actively promotes big band jazz through his roles as Director of Big Bands at the Conservatorium, National Big Band Composition Competition Convener, and WAYJO Advisory Board member.
Research interests include big band jazz innovation, cross-cultural collaboration, and jazz education. His work blends performance, composition, and advocacy, with notable collaborations with Maria Schneider, Chris Potter, and Darcy James Argue. Key achievements include founding Jazzgroove Records (over 100 releases), mentoring emerging artists, and organizing JMO national tours.
