David Sully

David Sully serves as Area Coordinator for Printmaking and instructor in etching at the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries, and Education (ACE) at the University of the West of England. He holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, MA in Fine Art - Printmaking, and ARE qualification.

Sully's artistic practice centers on printmaking with specialized expertise in copper plate etching, drypoint, aquatint, sugarlift, carborundum printing, and chine colle. He investigates the relationship between observational landscape drawing and etching techniques, translating field sketches into hand-rendered copper plate etchings. His work has been exhibited at the RWA Bristol, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and Bankside Gallery in London.

His 2023 collaborative exhibition 'Near and Far' demonstrates the department's mastery of diverse printmaking techniques, highlighting traditional etching methods applied to contemporary landscape interpretation. The exhibition showcases how observational drawing processes inform complex printmaking practices across multiple sub-techniques.

As an educator, Sully provides project-specific training through initial consultations coordinated via the Student Project Office. He maintains Monday-Thursday availability with evening access until 7:00pm, guiding students from concept development through technical execution to professional-level printmaking proficiency.

He actively collaborates with UWE Bristol's printmaking staff collective, contributing to departmental exhibitions and maintaining the print workshop as a hub for technical innovation in traditional print media.
