David Simmons is Associate Professor in Anthropology and Health Promotion at the University of South Carolina. His research examines cultural dimensions of health disparities, specializing in HIV/AIDS interventions, structural violence, and community-based participatory research in Sub-Saharan Africa and Caribbean communities.
Current projects analyze health challenges for Haitian migrant workers in the Dominican Republic and childhood malnutrition determinants in Tanzania. He previously held an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and directs study abroad programs in the Dominican Republic.
Publications include Modernizing Medicine in Zimbabwe: HIV/AIDS and Traditional Healers and studies on pandemic impacts in marginalized communities. Professional service includes presidency of the Association of Black Anthropologists and Board membership for the South Carolina TB Association.
