David R Boulware

Dr. David R Boulware is a Professor in the Department of Infectious Disease and International Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He is an infectious disease physician-scientist with formal training in public health, clinical trials, and tropical medicine. As a translational researcher, he combines clinical research training with basic science investigations into disease pathogenesis.

His primary research interests include:

• Meningitis in resource-limited areas
• Diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of meningitis
• HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis
• TB meningitis diagnostics
• Cryptococcal antigen screening
• Cost-effectiveness analyses in global health

Dr. Boulware's research focuses on improving clinical outcomes of HIV-infected persons with meningitis, particularly cryptococcal meningitis which is the second most common AIDS-defining opportunistic infection in Sub-Saharan Africa and the most common cause of adult meningitis. His work has significant implications for global health, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.

His recent publications (2025) demonstrate continued focus on cryptococcal meningitis treatment strategies, TB meningitis chemotherapy, and AIDS-related fungal infections. These works reflect his ongoing commitment to advancing treatment protocols for meningitis in both resource-limited and developed settings.

Dr. Boulware has received substantial research funding, with 41 projects and grants totaling significant NIH support. His current active projects include:

• Midcareer Mentoring for Clinical Research in HIV/AIDS-related cryptococcal and TB meningitis (2024-2029)
• Improving outcomes in HIV-associated opportunistic infections using CNS pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (2024-2029)
• Minnesota-Makerere-Mbarara Neuro-Infectious Disease Research Training Consortium (2024-2029)

He maintains active research collaborations in Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, leading a multidisciplinary international research team. Dr. Boulware is currently accepting PhD students for projects related to meningitis epidemiology, prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and clinical trials.
