About
David R. Clements is a Professor of Biology and Assistant Dean of Science at Trinity Western University's Faculty of Natural & Applied Sciences in Canada. He holds a PhD from Queen's University (1991) and specializes in invasive species biology with particular focus on weed science, climate change impacts, and ecological conservation.
His research interests span invasive species biology and ecology, weed science, agroecology, climate change, riparian ecology, and Garry oak ecosystems. Clements' work particularly examines how invasive species adapt to changing environmental conditions and human management practices, with significant field research conducted in British Columbia, China, and Australia.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on understanding the biological mechanisms of invasive plants, particularly mile-a-minute (Mikania micrantha), and developing practical management strategies. His research demonstrates how climate change is accelerating weed evolution and invasion patterns, requiring innovative approaches to agricultural and ecological management. He has also edited two significant books on plant invasions and weed persistence strategies.
- Excellence and Weed Science Award from the Canadian Weed Science Society (2014)
- Langley Environmental Partners Society Stewardship Volunteer of the Year Award (2009)
Clements manages TWU's field research sites including the Ecosystem Study Area, the Blaauw Eco Forest, and the Crow's Nest Ecological Research Area on Salt Spring Island. His grant portfolio includes NSERC Discovery Development Grants, Alliance Grants with the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver, and collaborations with international institutions. He actively serves on scientific advisory boards and writes 'The Green Beat,' a monthly environmental column for the Langley Advance Times newspaper.
His laboratory and field research operations span multiple locations including British Columbia's ecosystems, Yunnan Province in China, and research sites in Australia, focusing on both fundamental ecological understanding and practical applications for invasive species management.
