David Preece is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the School of Psychological Science within the UWA Medical School at The University of Western Australia, and a Senior Lecturer at Curtin University. He is also an Affiliate at Stanford University. His research focuses on emotion regulation, psychopathology, and clinical psychology, particularly in understanding and treating emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety.
David is a founding Director of the Perth Emotion & Psychopathology Lab, a cross-institutional collaboration involving over 40 researchers and clinicians. He has developed widely used psychometric tools like the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) and Perth Emotion Regulation Competency Inventory (PERCI), downloaded over 150,000 times globally. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Emotion and Psychopathology and contributes to editorial boards of Emotion and Frontiers in Psychiatry.
His work addresses emotion processing difficulties, particularly alexithymia, and their role in mental health disorders. He has secured a grant for a randomized controlled trial on stress interventions and holds awards including the Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship and AACBT Early Career Award. David actively promotes mental health initiatives through roles in the Australian Psychological Society and Australian Rotary Health.
