David Nicol is an Associate Professor of Theatre Studies and Cinema & Media Studies at Dalhousie University’s Fountain School of Performing Arts. His research focuses on early modern English drama, particularly the overlooked dramatist William Rowley. Nicol holds a BA from Aberystwyth University, an MA from the Shakespeare Institute (University of Birmingham), and a Ph.D. from the University of Central England (now UCE).
His major publications include Middleton and Rowley: Forms of Collaboration in the Jacobean Playhouse (2012) and numerous articles on Rowley’s plays in journals like Comparative Drama and Early Theatre. He is currently completing a digital edition of Rowley’s All’s Lost by Lust and contributed to the New Variorum edition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Nicol’s work extends into film studies, including an analysis of Terrence Malick’s The New World. His research bridges textual scholarship, performance history, and collaborative authorship in early modern theatre.
