Mark Bayer is Professor and Department Chair of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Liberal and Fine Arts. His academic work centers on the reception of early modern drama, Shakespeare studies, and intersections between theater and civic engagement.

Bayer's research explores both historical London playhouses and global Shakespeare adaptations, including their impact on community formation, political consciousness, and cultural institutions. His monograph Theatre, Community, and Civic Engagement in Jacobean London (2011) was a finalist for the Freedley Memorial Award, challenging traditional views of playhouses as disruptive by highlighting their role in social capital development.
Recent scholarship focuses on Shakespeare's cultural authority in the Middle East and the United States. His 2022 edited collection Shakespeare and Civil Unrest in Britain and the United States continues this transatlantic inquiry. Notable articles examine topics like theatrical economics, political agency in colonial contexts, and the evolution of Shakespeare studies in 19th-century America.
