Dr. David Markwardt is the Herbert L. and Margaret Wright DuPont Associate Professor in Biological Sciences at Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU), serving additionally as Associate Dean of the OWU Connection, Pre-Health Advisor, and Director of the Pre-Medicine/Pre-Dental Program. He holds a B.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology and Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Genetics at the same institution.
His research focuses on identifying genes involved in fungal cell wall formation and maintenance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, aiming to develop novel anti-fungal drugs. Techniques employed include PCR, bioinformatics, microbiological cell culture, and microscopy. He teaches courses in cell/molecular biology and immunology, receiving acclaim for his teaching enthusiasm and accessibility.
Awarded the 2012 Sherwood Dodge Shankland Award for encouraging scholarly excellence, Dr. Markwardt advises the Biomedical Engineering track in Zoology and participates in the Honors Board. His lab emphasizes signal transduction pathways and mRNA regulation in response to environmental changes.
