David M. Johnson is a Professor of Classics in the School of Languages & Linguistics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), where he has taught since 1998. His expertise spans Latin and Greek language instruction alongside content courses covering the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity.
He earned a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996. His research centers on Athenian author Xenophon (c. 430-350 BCE), particularly Xenophon's portrayals of Socrates, advancing understanding of Socratic literature within historical and philosophical contexts.
Johnson's recent scholarly output culminates in Xenophon's Socratic Works (Routledge, 2021), reflecting deep engagement with classical texts. This publication underscores trends in classical reception studies and Athenian intellectual history.
As an educator, he mentors students in the Classics program and maintains an active professional presence through his personal website, contributing to academic discourse beyond campus.
